Watch the Devils Tower Prairie Dog Town Live
Look carefully across the open ground and you may spot prairie dogs moving between their burrows.
Black-tailed prairie dogs live in highly social colonies known as towns. They spend much of their time above ground feeding, watching for predators, communicating with other members of the colony, and maintaining their burrows.
Their burrowing and feeding habits give the landscape its distinctive appearance. Prairie dogs prefer short vegetation that allows them to see approaching predators, and they actively clip taller plants around their colony.
The result is the broad, relatively open grassland visible on the webcam.
Prairie dogs may be difficult to spot individually in the wide webcam image, but activity around burrows can sometimes be visible.
Watch for Wildlife in the Belle Fourche River Valley
Prairie dogs are an important part of the ecosystem at Devils Tower National Monument.
Their colony provides habitat and food for numerous other animals. Foxes, badgers, eagles, hawks, deer, and other wildlife may appear around the prairie dog town.
The landscape itself also makes this an interesting webcam throughout the year.
Summer brings dry prairie grasses, thunderstorms, and changing skies. Fall gradually changes the vegetation, while winter snow can completely transform the colony and surrounding hills.
Spring brings renewed plant growth and increased wildlife activity across the prairie.
Visitors can see the prairie dog town from several pullouts along the park road or explore the surrounding landscape on the South Side and Valley View trails.

About the Devils Tower Prairie Dog Town
The prairie dog town at Devils Tower National Monument occupies approximately 40 acres of grassland near the Belle Fourche River and is home to more than 600 black-tailed prairie dogs.
Black-tailed prairie dogs are actually ground squirrels rather than dogs. Their name comes from the bark-like vocalizations they use to communicate with one another.
Prairie dogs live in complex social communities known as towns. Within the larger colony, family groups occupy networks of underground burrows that provide shelter from predators and extreme weather.
Above ground, prairie dogs spend a considerable amount of time watching for danger.
Coyotes, badgers, foxes, eagles, hawks, owls, bobcats, rattlesnakes, and other predators may prey on prairie dogs. When one detects danger, warning calls alert other members of the colony.
Prairie dogs also play an important ecological role.
Their burrowing changes soil conditions, while their grazing and clipping of vegetation create short-grass habitat used by other species. Because so many predators depend on them for food, prairie dogs are considered a keystone species of the prairie ecosystem.
The Devils Tower colony is one of the few remaining prairie dog towns in the Black Hills region.
Visitors can observe the colony from three pullouts along the park road. The South Side and Valley View trails also pass through the surrounding Belle Fourche River area.
Prairie dogs should always be viewed from a distance and never fed or approached.
The webcam provides an easy way to watch this fascinating prairie ecosystem and its changing conditions throughout the year.
