About the Devils Tower Prairie Dog Town

The prairie dog town at Devils Tower National Monument is located in the grasslands of the Belle Fourche River valley near the main park road.

The colony is home to black-tailed prairie dogs, a native Great Plains species known for living in highly organized communities called towns.

Prairie dogs aren’t actually dogs. They are members of the squirrel family and get their name from their distinctive bark-like warning calls.

The Devils Tower colony covers approximately 40 acres and contains more than 600 prairie dogs.

Their extensive network of underground burrows creates habitat that benefits numerous other species, making prairie dogs an important part of the prairie ecosystem.

Predators including foxes, badgers, coyotes, eagles, hawks, and other raptors may hunt around prairie dog colonies. Deer and numerous bird species also frequent the grasslands around the Devils Tower town.

Visitors can watch the prairie dogs from several paved pullouts along the park road. The South Side and Valley View trails also provide opportunities to explore the surrounding landscape.

Spring, summer, and fall generally provide the best opportunities for wildlife watching. Prairie dogs are active throughout the day, although activity may decrease during severe winter weather.

Visitors should observe prairie dogs from a distance and never feed or approach them. Although they may appear tame, prairie dogs are wild animals.

With Devils Tower rising above the surrounding landscape, this is one of the most memorable wildlife viewing areas in the monument.
