The Purchase Knob Webcam provides a live mountain view from the North Carolina side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Located at the Appalachian Highlands Science Learning Center near Maggie Valley, the camera looks across the forested ridges and valleys of the southern Appalachian Mountains.

Purchase Knob is one of the highest-elevation research and education areas in the park. The webcam is part of the National Park Service air-quality monitoring network and provides an excellent real-time look at visibility, clouds, weather, seasonal color, and changing conditions across the Smokies.

The Purchase Knob webcam captures one of the characteristics that gave the Great Smoky Mountains their name: layer after layer of blue and gray mountain ridges fading into the distance.

Visibility can vary dramatically.

On exceptionally clear days, distant ridges remain sharply defined across the horizon. Humidity, haze, clouds, fog, and air pollution can progressively obscure those mountains and shorten the visible distance.

The National Park Service uses webcams such as Purchase Knob to help monitor those changes in visibility and air quality.

Weather can transform the view just as quickly.

Low clouds may completely engulf the high-elevation landscape. Summer thunderstorms can build over the mountains, while fall brings brilliant color to the surrounding hardwood forests.

Winter occasionally covers the higher elevations with snow, and spring gradually returns green vegetation to the mountains and valleys.

A High-Elevation View on the North Carolina Side of the Smokies

Purchase Knob lies along the Cataloochee Divide in Haywood County, North Carolina, just north of Maggie Valley.

The property is part of Great Smoky Mountains National Park but is quite different from heavily visited destinations such as Cades Cove, Newfound Gap, or Kuwohi.

Rather than serving primarily as a visitor attraction, Purchase Knob is an important center for scientific research and education.

Its high elevation and relatively undeveloped surroundings make it an excellent location for studying the ecosystems, weather, air quality, forests, and wildlife of the southern Appalachian Mountains.

About Purchase Knob

Purchase Knob is a 5,086-foot mountain on the North Carolina side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Haywood County.

The surrounding property, historically known as “The Purchase,” encompasses approximately 535 acres along the Cataloochee Divide.

Kathryn McNeil and Voit Gilmore donated the property to Great Smoky Mountains National Park around 2000, representing the largest donation of land to the park since its establishment.

The property subsequently became home to the Appalachian Highlands Science Learning Center, one of a network of National Park Service facilities created to connect scientific research with education.

The center provides laboratory space, offices, classrooms, and accommodations for visiting researchers.

Scientists, students, teachers, and other participants use Purchase Knob to study subjects ranging from forest ecology and wildlife to climate, water quality, and atmospheric conditions.

Its location is particularly valuable for environmental research.

High-elevation ecosystems in the Great Smoky Mountains can experience conditions dramatically different from communities in the valleys below. Temperature, precipitation, clouds, wind, and air pollution all interact with the mountainous terrain.

Air quality has been an especially important research and monitoring issue within Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Natural humidity contributes to the famous blue haze of the Smokies, but human-caused air pollution can substantially reduce visibility. On polluted or particularly hazy days, distant mountain ridges that are normally visible may disappear from view.
