Look Rock Webcam – Great Smoky Mountains

Look Rock Webcam – Great Smoky Mountains
The Look Rock Webcam provides a live panoramic mountain view from the western side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. Located at Look Rock Observation Tower along the Foothills Parkway, the camera overlooks layers of forested ridges stretching across the western Smokies.
The webcam is part of the National Park Service air-quality monitoring network and provides an excellent real-time look at mountain visibility, haze, clouds, storms, and changing conditions across this quieter side of the national park.
Watch the Great Smoky Mountains from Look Rock
Look Rock offers one of the broadest mountain vistas on the western side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
From the observation tower, the landscape unfolds in a series of forest-covered ridges and valleys. On clear days, visibility can extend far beyond the immediate mountains.
Other days demonstrate exactly how the Great Smoky Mountains earned their name.
Moisture, clouds, fog, and the characteristic blue haze of the southern Appalachians can soften distant ridges until they gradually disappear into the horizon.
Air pollution can further reduce visibility, which is one reason the National Park Service operates an air-quality monitoring camera at Look Rock.
Watch Weather and Changing Mountain Conditions
Look Rock is an especially interesting location for watching weather move across the Smokies.
Spring and summer thunderstorms can develop quickly over the mountains. In fact, the Look Rock webcam has captured dramatic lightning strikes during severe storms in the park.
Summer brings deep green forests and frequent humid conditions, while fall transforms the surrounding mountains with brilliant foliage.
Because of the remote location and lack of winter power, the National Park Service currently operates the Look Rock webcam seasonally rather than throughout the entire year.
When operating, images are generally updated approximately every 15 minutes.
About Look Rock
Look Rock is a scenic mountain destination along the Foothills Parkway on the western side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
This portion of the park lies between Walland, Tennessee, and Chilhowee Lake and is considerably quieter than heavily visited destinations around Gatlinburg, Newfound Gap, and Cades Cove.
Look Rock is best known for its observation tower.
Visitors reach the tower by following a relatively short trail from the parking area along the Foothills Parkway. The elevated observation platform provides expansive views across the western Great Smoky Mountains and surrounding Tennessee landscape.
The tower is also historically interesting.
Look Rock Observation Tower was developed during the National Park Service’s Mission 66 era, a major mid-20th-century program designed to modernize facilities throughout the national park system.
Its design was influenced by the distinctive Kuwohi Observation Tower near the highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Today, Look Rock remains both a scenic viewpoint and an important environmental monitoring location.
The National Park Service monitors air quality throughout the Smokies because haze and airborne pollution can substantially reduce visibility across the mountains.
Natural moisture contributes to the famous blue haze of the Smokies, but pollution-caused haze is different and can dramatically shorten the distance visible from locations such as Look Rock.
The webcam provides an easy way to observe those changing conditions while enjoying one of the best panoramic views on the western side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
