Crater Lake Steel Information Center Webcam – Snow Conditions

The Crater Lake Steel Information Center Webcam provides a live look at snow and current conditions at Park Headquarters in Crater Lake National Park, Oregon. Located at approximately 6,450 feet in elevation, this camera is particularly useful for seeing just how much snow has accumulated inside the park.

Crater Lake is one of the snowiest inhabited places in the United States, and winter snow depths around Park Headquarters can become extraordinary. The National Park Service notes that snow visible from this webcam may reach 10 to 15 feet deep during late winter and early spring.

Unlike the park’s famous lake webcam, this camera isn’t about the view. It’s about the snow.

Watch Crater Lake Snow Conditions Live

    Winter dramatically transforms Park Headquarters.

Heavy Pacific storms carry moisture inland toward the Cascade Range, where elevation and cold temperatures can produce enormous amounts of snow at Crater Lake National Park.

Snowbanks may gradually rise around buildings, roads, signs, trees, and parked vehicles as winter progresses.

By late winter and early spring, snow can become so deep around the Steel Information Center that portions of the surrounding buildings may be difficult to recognize.

The webcam provides an excellent visual reference for understanding current conditions before visiting the park.

Snow is a defining part of the Crater Lake landscape.

The park’s high elevation and location in Oregon’s Cascade Range create a long winter season, with snow frequently lingering well into spring and early summer.

Keeping the park accessible requires an enormous snow-removal operation.

Road crews use heavy equipment, including large rotary snowplows, to clear Munson Valley Road and other areas that remain accessible during winter.

Even after spring arrives at lower elevations in Oregon, Crater Lake may still be buried beneath deep snow.

That makes this webcam particularly interesting from winter through late spring, when the accumulation around Park Headquarters can be astonishing.

    About the Steel Information Center

The Steel Information Center is located at Park Headquarters in Crater Lake National Park, approximately three miles south of Rim Village on Munson Valley Road.

The historic building was constructed in 1932 and originally served as a ranger dormitory.

It later became a visitor contact station and today provides park information, maps, entrance passes, exhibits, restrooms, and a park store.

The building recently underwent a major renovation designed to strengthen it against earthquakes and the tremendous snow loads experienced at Crater Lake.

Those snow loads are no small concern.

The Steel Information Center sits at approximately 6,450 feet in elevation in one of the snowiest environments in the Cascade Range. During particularly snowy periods, accumulation around Park Headquarters can reach the building’s second story.

Winter access to the building may even require passage through a snow tunnel.

The webcam itself is located inside the Administration Building at Park Headquarters, looking through a second-story office window. During severe winter conditions, snow and ice can sometimes partially obstruct the camera’s view.

Park Headquarters remains an important center of activity throughout the year, particularly during winter when many higher-elevation roads and facilities around Crater Lake are inaccessible.

The Steel Information Center Webcam provides an unusually good look at what winter really means at Crater Lake National Park.
