    The Mauna Loa Summit Thermal Webcam provides a live thermal view of Mokuʻāweoweo, the large summit caldera of Mauna Loa on Hawaiʻi Island.     Unlike a conventional scenic webcam, the MTcam is designed to detect heat. Thermal imagery can make areas of elevated temperature more visible, particularly during periods of volcanic activity when hot lava, vents, or other thermal features may be present around the summit.

    Mauna Loa is one of Earth’s largest active volcanoes. Its immense mass extends from deep beneath the Pacific Ocean to its high summit, covering a substantial portion of Hawaiʻi Island.

    Mokuʻāweoweo has been the site of numerous historic eruptions. Activity at Mauna Loa may begin around the summit before migrating into either the Northeast Rift Zone or Southwest Rift Zone. Lava produced during eruptions can travel rapidly down the volcano’s long slopes, which is one reason Mauna Loa is closely monitored.

    The summit erupted most recently in 2022, when activity began within Mokuʻāweoweo before shifting to the Northeast Rift Zone. The event demonstrated how quickly conditions at Mauna Loa can change following a prolonged period without an eruption.
