Mauna Loa’s Southwest Rift Zone extends from Mokuʻāweoweo Caldera at the volcano’s summit toward the southwestern coast of Hawaiʻi Island. It is one of two major rift zones associated with Mauna Loa, with the Northeast Rift Zone extending in the opposite direction.
Rift zones are areas where the volcano’s structure allows magma to move away from the summit through underground fractures. When magma reaches the surface, eruptions can occur from fissures and vents located miles from the summit caldera.
The Southwest Rift Zone has produced numerous lava flows during Mauna Loa’s eruptive history. Some eruptions have sent lava rapidly down the volcano’s steep southwestern slopes toward lower-elevation communities and the ocean.
