About Mauna Loa’s Upper and Middle Southwest Rift Zone
Mauna Loa’s Southwest Rift Zone extends from Mokuʻāweoweo Caldera at the volcano’s summit toward the southwestern side of Hawaiʻi Island. Together with the Northeast Rift Zone, it forms one of the primary structural pathways through which magma can move away from Mauna Loa’s summit.
The upper portion begins near the summit at more than 13,000 feet above sea level. From there, the rift zone descends through the middle slopes toward increasingly lower elevations.
This enormous elevation range creates a striking volcanic landscape. Near the summit, vegetation is extremely limited and lava fields dominate the terrain. Farther downslope, scattered vegetation gradually becomes more common among lava flows from different eruptive periods.
Fissures, cones, vents, and overlapping flows reveal the Southwest Rift Zone’s long history of volcanic activity. During some Mauna Loa eruptions, activity has migrated from the summit into this rift zone, allowing lava to travel rapidly toward lower elevations.
Much of the upper and middle Southwest Rift Zone is remote and undeveloped. The terrain is far removed from the developed visitor facilities around Kīlauea and can be difficult to access even for experienced backcountry travelers.
Weather adds another challenge. Temperatures decrease significantly with elevation, and the upper mountain can experience freezing conditions, strong winds, fog, clouds, and occasional snow. Conditions become progressively warmer farther down the rift zone.
